(After Reading The Hub, Do Practice Breathing Technique At the End Of The Hub,You Will Be Amazed )

WHAT IS YOGA AND HOW IT BECOMES POPULAR IN THE WEST?

Yoga has derived its name from a Sanskrit word Yuj which means "to unite" or "to attach". Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy with a high level of commitment is called a yogi (may be applied to a man or a woman) or yogini (traditionally denoting a woman). Many philosopher define Yoga in many different ways.Well,I will go with the simple defination followed by an interesting story.
Yoga is physical, mental and spiritual practice.Yoga is just an exercise for some people whereas to some it is an escape from real world to the inner world(inner self). Some people think that it is anti-christian or anti-Islam.According to me Yoga is for all and most importantly it is free and always will be.
You will be surprised to know that Yoga philosophy became popular in 19th century.Yes,you heard it right 19th century.Even 60% of Hindus in India, where Yoga has its root, did not know about this philosophy until 19th century. You must be wondering how Yoga became so popular in the west?
One of the great saints Swami Vivekanand introduced this philosophy to the west in 19th century and he was successful to do so.He was known to be a man of extraordinary concentration and memory. He used to say "Yoga can unlock the hidden powers in you because I have unlocked'. One day his disciple asked him "Baba,How can I find inner peace and how can I make balance between outer world and inner world ". Swami Vivekanand answered"The simpler way is Yoga and the harder way is meditation". It is very true.

TYPES OF YOGA

1.Gyan Yoga or Philosophy
2.Bhakti Yoga or Path of devotional bliss.
3.Karma Yoga or Path of blissful action
4.Raja Yoga or Path of MIND CONTROL (Considered to be best)

Raja Yoga is considered to be best because it includes the practice to control body and mind.If one can control body and mind then one can practice all types of yoga very easily.Allow me to go more deeper.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are widely regarded as the first compilation of the formal yoga philosophy. He defined Yoga word as-
योग: चित्त-वृत्ति निरोध:
(yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ)
I. K. Taimni translates the sutra as "Yoga is the inhibition of the modifications (vṛtti) of the mind (citta)". Swami Vivekananda translates the sutra as "Yoga is restraining the mind-stuff (Citta) from taking various forms (Vrittis)." Edwin Bryant explains that, to Patanjali, "Yoga essentially consists of meditative practices culminating in attaining a state of consciousness free from all modes of active or discursive thought, and of eventually attaining a state where consciousness is unaware of any object external to itself, that is, is only aware of its own nature as consciousness unmixed with any other object."

I will end this hub with a Breathing technique which will energize you. Here we go.Oh oops there are some terms and conditions.

Before the practice You have to SMILE.Smile a bit,bit more, yeah you got it.

BREATH IN SLOWLY SO AS TO FEEL EVERY PARTICLE OF AIR,EVERY ATOM OF OXYGEN STRIKING YOUR NOSTRIL AND THEN GOING INTO YOUR LUNGS VERY SLOWLY AND HOLD YOUR BREATH WITH GRATEFULNESS TOWARDS NATURE WHICH IS SUPPLYING OXYGEN AND MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE LIFE ON THIS PLANET. AFTER SUITABLE TIME BREATH OUT SO AS TO FEEL EVERY ATOM OF CARBON DIOXIDE.NOW CLOSE YOUR EYES AND FEEL HAPPINESS(I AM FINE ,EVERYTHING IS FINE). REPEAT IT..
